Dr Daniel Somerville – Non-Binary Identity, Performance and Health Care

As a performance researcher I am interested in how non-binary people present themselves on stage – the non-binary performative. The validity of non-binary identity is disputed, and many non-binary people face obstacles to healthcare or encounter triggering gender dysmorphic circumstances when trying to access health care – their core gender identity sometimes simply being denied or refused. The aim of the project is to identify and analyse how non-binary performers perform their non-binary-ness and then to set them a task with a specific audience in mind. What would they like to say, via the medium of drag and queer cabaret, to health professionals? Presenting in this way, the performance outcome should be both accessible and entertaining as well as challenging and informative.
