Client Visit: Ollie Cullen

Game art level 6 students were visited by industry professional, Ollie Cullen, who came in to review the games that they had been working on.

The level 6 game art students were excited to have a game industry professional visit them in the final week of teaching to wrap semester 1 up nicely. They had been busily making games in groups in order to pitch these games to our client who introduced the game jam theme in September.

Our client Ollie Cullen is a producer from Lab42 Games, part of the Sumo Digital group. Ollie had recently led production on Metal: Hellsinger VR, which received a nomination at the Game Awards 2024. It’s been an exciting year for Ollie as he was also a speaker at Devcom this summer, discussing the team’s successes when porting to VR. We would like to thank Ollie for taking time out of his busy schedule to help our students in game art gain a better understanding of the industry.

When Ollie came in for his visit, the students were able to act in a professional manner and demonstrate their games alongside their pitches to show Ollie how they were able to follow the game jam theme he had given them. This task was designed for one of our final year modules on game art, delivered by Zara Sharma, which focuses on the students developing a game to highlight their game art while working in teams for a real client. The purpose of the game jam was to make something quickly that is able to give the client a feel for the game so that they can better understand how the game would work, in addition to the pitch information.

Ollie was able to give meaningful feedback to their initial pitches in October and followed this up in his December visit. Some of the students had questions about the industry in general, to which Ollie was able to share guidance and advice that will help them on their way to gaining future employment.

Ollie commented that he “was blown away by the passion, creativity and effort the students put into their presentations and showcases. It’s always inspiring to see such dedication and fresh perspectives.” He added that there was “great talent coming out of this University.”

Thank you Ollie and Lab42 for your support.
