BA (hons) Illustration…
…challenges the position of the illustrator within commercial, social, political and cultural contexts, exploring illustration as a visual language, and it’s relationship with the text that it addresses, encouraging you to develop an ambition for your own practice founded on subject knowledge.
There is a focus on international collaboration and real-world experience, with industry links to major illustrators and publishers from around the world, so you can be a part of the international illustration community from day one. Develop your ideas and your portfolio and show them off in public exhibitions.

BRIANNA SKINNER
Board Game
This project aided me in exploring fresh ways to use texture and bring atmosphere within a 2D canvas. Moreover I created 3D assets associated with board games strengthening my perspective on where illustration can be applied.

Hubbard art competition
Fantasy illustration is my speciality therefore expanding on this practice was on my radar, for this competition I furthered my understanding on digital tools to create an artwork I am proud of.

Change Postcard
Sea Change is an international project that highlights the threat our oceans face through pollution and climate warming. I was inspired by merfolk characters and participated by portraying this message in the form of a postcard.

Once Upon a Time
Transformations in fairytales have always fascinated me. Princesses have their beauty from within, whether it’s physical, emotional, or magical. Showing how the complexity of the princesses and how their stories develop have been the inspiration for this project.
Retro Gaming Nostalgia
This piece is about retro gaming and the nostalgia that comes with it and looking into how times have changed with gaming which is why it is done in pixel art.

Derwent art prize 2025
This piece is a design that I have made for this competition. It’s combining what I’ve learnt at the tattoo studio and university.

Commentary of Paris Olympics
This is a mini project that I focused on within my topic, The effects that the Olympics has on a city. It highlights the local’s people, positive and negative view and how they had been affective, by taking quotes and illustrating them.

What a day
I have created a children’s picture book depicting the daily life of a child though illustration animals, showing the normal everyday things that most children would do thought their day, taking inspiration from my sister.

At the Circus
Photograph of a doll made for the 2025 Batsford Prize competition, theme ‘Fun and Play’. The doll’s head is made from polymer clay and the body from needle felting over armature wire.

London Travel poster
Based on exploration and travel, this wanderlust digital piece is based on a trip last year from when I went to London. I felt inspired to create something from it using my own colour palette.

Sea Change Jigsaw piece
Representing “Sea Change” I made this postcard that has several different interesting sea creatures on. Combining traditional and digital forms into this piece I have used mono-printing for the creatures and a digital art background.

Fantasy Trading Cards
This project uses my passion for trading cards to make my own. using games like Magic The Gathering to inspire the gameplay and design, I created 20 cards which are used to play the game as if it was complete.

Comic Book Project
The goal of this project was to create a pitch document for a potential comic series idea, using the idea of “creating a world in order to tell a narrative”. I created an earth-like fantasy world shown through concept arts.

Green Man of the Sea
A response to the Sea Change environmental project, ‘Sirens of Sustainability.’ The foliate image of the green man inspired this water bound counterpart. Created through foam printing techniques to capture the face of the ocean, it was later included in the Sea Change exhibition at the Hive library.

King of the Rascals
The cover illustration from my picture book, ‘King of the Rascals.’ The book authentically reflects my experiences growing up alternatively (nomadic, off-grid). The family within inhabit Ruby Rust the Double Decker Bus and attempt to navigate the shifting landscapes of modern day. Created with watercolour.

Creating my own food labels!
I am very interested in exploring folklore and culture through different creative endeavours. This project was an imagined collaboration between different Costa Rican companies to create a line of local treats with labels inspired by the traditional ‘carreta’ painting style.

Practicing my watercolour skills!
One of my goals through this degree was to strengthen my traditional art skills. I latched on to watercolour as the medium I wanted to learn, and three years later my main takeaway is to let go of expectation and just enjoy the process.

Of Small Beginnings
Paired alongside a short prequel I wrote to another story, I created the character of Avin, a dragon with the ability of shape shifting. I was able to use this project to delve into acrylic painting and create a fun experiential image representing the Avin’s journey in the short story ‘Of Small Beginnings’.

Inktober
I used the opportunity of Inktober to further world build in one of the fantasy worlds I have created. I wanted to use to opportunity to further my traditional art skills and enjoyed experimenting through combining ink with water, printing and line work to bring to life some of the storyline of my novel!

Final Major Project
‘Lost in paradise’ was an experiment into digital Superimposition illustration with a focus on daydreaming. I focused on traditional illustration during my time here, but I decided to do something that I enjoy in mixed media making and the occasional collage.

D&AD New Blood Award
This was a project laid out by Hellmann’s who were looking for a sort of rejuvenation of their brand with creative liberties. I decided to design a book cover of a Heston Blumenthal and mayonnaise collaboration.

Illustrators of the Future
This digital painting is a fantastical reimagining of the pacific garbage patch and is the first picture in a triptych. I aimed to create a world where human debris is repurposed into architecture for an underwater civilisation.

Sea Change Postcard
Inspired by a news article, I painted this postcard of a large barrel jellyfish washed up on the coast of Fairbourne, Wales for the ‘Sea Change’ project. The vibrant colours and textures were achieved by dabbing acrylic paint with sponges.
Beck Brothers
An animation project on my 2 characters, the Beck brothers, navigating their life through poverty and coming across someone who ends up exploiting their vulnerability and need for a home.

Fumetto comics – “rich”
Three friends going to a high-class university of different class backgrounds go shopping for Christmas last minute, it is a comedic short comic commenting on the lack of social awareness of the rich and privileged friend who fails to acknowledge the monetary boundaries of the lower and middle class and how the rich will never want to acknowledge that they had an advantage.


Desert Dwellers
My Children’s Book Design project titled “Desert Dwellers: Who and What lives in the Deserts around the World”. Deserts are fascinating places, and I wanted to show that they are home to some of the most unique life on earth.

Flower’s Pixel Paradise
Taking inspiration from the aesthetics of pre-social media internet, Flower’s Pixel Paradise is my love letter to the internet of the late 1990s and early 2000s that I grew up on.

Project part 01
Focusing on the Wild West, from the perspective of women who lived and worked at this time. This character ‘Lucky Red’ allowed an exploration of a specific dynamic and graphic illustrative style and technique.

Project part 02
The journey and narrative were developed through the illustrations, visualising the spoken and written account of the story behind the character ‘Lucky Red’.
