Fine Art & Psychology

Fine Art & Psychology

……combines a solid foundation in studio-based Fine Art practice with an integrated programme of psychology study. It approaches questions of psychology from the perspective of art making, interpretation and appreciation, an approach supported and underpinned by a range of practical and theoretical psychology modules. The focus of Fine Art with Psychology is the development of a unique, personal arts practice that explores the value of art for the health and wellbeing of individuals and society at large.

In The I

A short, visual novel style video game where you “talk” directly to the artwork. As with real conversations, however, not everything you say may be taken well.

A dream
of lights

You believe everything you see on a screen? Try looking at the piece through a phone camera.

AYANA LONESKY

Watashi wa dare
(who am I)

The first artwork where I explored my identity. I took photos for my coming of age ceremony in Japan. I enjoyed the ceremony, it was a great way to celebrate becoming an adult.

Clawing at Skin

Clawing at Skin is more about my relationship with my body and food. For this artwork, I forced myself to look at my body and draw it, head on. Including all my imperfections like eczema and rolls, and embracing them.

Panting up my dirty
laundry – blood of
a woman

Represents the struggles with menstruation women face alone through most their life. This piece has been made to help pull away from the taboo shadow that has been cast over it. Women should be able to menstruate without feeling shame and alone during this time.

hanging up my
dirty laundry –
free the stitch

This piece represents the difference each, and every woman has and to celebrate the beauty within this. This wearable art is to be worn out in public to help normalise women’s bodies and to remove the sexualised views.

JENNIFER BARROS

Hyaline Series:
Soul Stripper

The work represents a woman emerging from a socially constructed comfort zone to reclaim her feminine sexual power. In the process, she releases her self-authority by reconfiguring the signifier into the signified.

Hyaline Series:
Linguistic
Purification from
Patriarchal Toxins

This painting brings awareness to how deeply human perception is shaped by the male narrative, and how such a patriarchal framework distorts language itself and delegitimizes other groups due to their different reality.

JOSEPHINE CHAMBERS

Expel

This piece is representative of emotions expressed through this dance. It’s about how expressing oneself expels dark emotions in a cathartic experience, yet there is joy due to the weight of pain being lifted and the love of the dance.

Disperse

Here is a display of diffused colour demonstrating constant emotional flow. Each colour blurs to convey the idea that emotion is fleeting. The random application of paint provides a lack of control, emotion residing inside us can come raining down.

KAMILLE ALLEN-WHITE

Project 01

I focus on nostalgia and connections between people that I know or are of interest.

Project 02

I like colour and detail delivered in simplistic ways. Reflection is involved in the process and final image; my art mood is always positive.

KIMBERLY MIFSUD

Bloody

A sheer ivory gown with red beading. This piece symbolises the relationship between beauty and pain through an almost bridal gown with hand- stitched red beading symbolising blood.

Thorns

An opaque black gown with green and brown toned beading. It has cut-outs moving from the top shoulder down to the hip of the dress, almost as if the dress has been torn; a symbol of the relationship between beauty and pain.

Ryoko

An interactive sensory sculpture showing the juxtaposition of fighting your demons or finding beauty. A story where good and evil fight for control, an escape to a world where your imagination can take over and your mental health struggles can take a step back or materialize into clarity.

Basgiath

Created in response to the fantasy book ‘Fourth Wing’ by Rebecca Yarros. Whenever I’m struggling with my mental health issues, I always find throwing myself into an imaginary world with dragons and magic can be therapeutic. Who doesn’t want to join a dragon war college and learn how to fly dragons?

One-Sided
Attachment

One-Sided Attachment is the centrepiece of my exhibition- a sculptural piece that delves into the theme of unreciprocated emotions between two individuals, highlighting how such imbalances can become toxic and mentally damaging.

Extremes

Extremes is one piece from my collection of drawings centred on mental health, specifically Borderline Personality Disorder, depression, and anxiety. Through this collection, I reflect on my personal journey with mental health challenges and the path toward healing.

SARAH THORP

Where the
mugs go

This project explores the fundamental human need is the need for belonging and the need for acceptance and safety. through the quiet corners, childhood memories, it reflects my personal journey to find home.

My tree

Childhood and nostalgia have played a key role in my work this year. ‘My Tree’ reflects the simplicity of childhood, a time were escaping from reality was effortless and safe.

A triptych of
abstract timelines

What was and What is, Between Two Goodbyes and The Weight of Time. Our Last Conversation evokes a powerful range of emotions, best represented through a triptych of abstract timelines reflecting my experience of grief – from my grandad’s passing in March to my nans in October 2024.

Our Last
Conversation

Captures a moment unbeknown to the artist, her last conversation with her grandad specifically painted from her perspective. The absence of personal possessions in the painting highlights the emptiness a family home can feel after loss.

SUSANNAH MORRIS

Be Still

Depicting a soft sunset over a calm, milky sea, this painting explores a moment of pause. Taking a step back from the troubles and stresses of life to simply be still and bask in the quiet beauty of the sublime.

River of Life

An exploration of the transience of life, River of Life depicts a winding river to symbolize the passage of time, with delicate paper boats representing individuals’ journeys as they navigate their way through its unpredictable twists and turns.
